San Antonio Orthopaedic Group mentioned in the Wall Street Journal

Some consumers say they prefer the retail-style billing. “When you walk away, you know you’re done with all your responsibility,” says Joe Gierst, of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Gierst made a $35 co-payment last week before seeing a doctor at San Antonio Orthopaedic Group for a sore wrist. He then paid his $46 co-insurance tab as he left the clinic. The 48-year-old, who works for a medical-device maker, says he was happy to avoid “that mystery bill that shows up six weeks later.”

Important Notice to our Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas Patients! |
Effective September 18, 2008, we will no longer participate with BCBSTX, thereby ending our care with you.
We have always been committed to putting patients first,
and have not been willing to compromise the practice of
medicine as this is not just another business – it is your trust
in our caring for you and your family. For over 60 years, we have
been proud to put all of our resources into serving the needs of
our patients. Unfortunately, our efforts to negotiate a reasonable
contract with BCBSTX that would allow us to continue our relationship with you have failed….

New Technique to Ease Back Pain |
Back surgery that requires fusion of the spine is common. Although it can ease pain and suffering, the operation can create lasting restrictions. Now, Dr. Frank Kuwamura of The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group, is testing a new technique that may keep patients pain free and flexible.
To qualify for the study of this new device, you must be between the ages of 40 and 80 with spinal stenosis and have tried more conservative measures for at least six months. For more information, you can contact the San Antonio Orthopedic Group at 210-804-5400.
You may also visit This Link to find out more about the study or contact our research coordinator, Carl Negley at 210-259-5836

New FDA Approved Cervical Disc Implant |
November 22, 2007
An amazing new surgical procedure is treating neck pain without fusion, by placing a manmade disc in a patient's neck. Now, patients have the option of getting a stainless steel implant to replace her disc and get rid of the pressure on her nerves. It's an alternative to fusion.
"Instead of limiting the motion, this device preserves pretty close to natural or to normal motion at that disc level. So the patient wouldn't experience any stiffness," said Dr. Pablo Vazquez-Seoane, an orthopedic spine surgeon at The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group
