| What
is a Hand Surgeon? |
Hands help us to
eat, dress, write, earn a living, create art, and do many
other activities.
To perform these activities, our hands require sensation
and movement,
provided by a delicate balance of nerve, vessel, tendon,
bone, and joint function.
Care of hand problems requires treatment of
all these different types
of tissues that make function of the hand possible.
The field of hand surgery deals with surgical and non-surgical
treatments
for conditions and problems that may take place in the hand
and upper extremity.
Hand surgeons treat many conditions involving the upper extremity including: |
|
Carpal
tunnel syndrome |
|
Trigger
finger |
|
Dupuytren’s
contracture |
|
Degenerative
arthritis |
|
Open
wounds |
|
Broken
bones |
|
Tendon
lacerations |
|
Nerve
and vessel damage |
|
along with more
complex problems of congenital deformities, and rheumatoid
arthritis. |
| |
| |
| Qualifications |
Hand surgery is
part of the practice of orthopaedic or plastic surgery.
As surgical
techniques in the upper extremity have become more refined
and complex,
specialized training in hand surgery has become more
important. Subspecialty
training usually takes place during an additional
one-year fellowship
in hand surgery after a physician has completed a
four to five year residency. In addition, board certified
orthopaedic
surgeons, plastic surgeons, or general surgeons who have
completed a
hand fellowship may take an examination in hand surgery to
obtain
a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. |
