Dr. Scott Seidel Discusses Text Neck with WOAI

TSAOG’s Dr. Scott R. Seidel was interviewed by WOAI’s Berit Mason on Wednesday regarding “text neck,” or neck pain brought on by the prolonged use of mobile devices.

According to Dr. Seidel, “It really is a problem and it is becoming an epidemic. We have people who take ibuprofen daily, 400, 600, 800 milligrams daily for the neck pain.  And most of them have no idea where it’s coming from.”

Dr. Scott Seidel on Sacroiliac (or SI) Pain

Posted on

A recent study estimates that up to 30% of people with chronic low back pain may have the SI (or Sacroiliac) joint to blame for their pain.  This joint is under appreciated as a pain generator and should be looked at more closely when determining the source of low back pain.

The SI joint is the junction between the bottom of the spine and the hips.  The reason this remains a challenging joint to diagnose is due to the anatomy and function of the region. The SI joint is a weight-bearing joint which distributes forces between the spine and the lower extremities as well as stabilizing most low back activity.

Most commonly it is found that SI pain is the result of mechanical dysfunction.  Typically there are slight, but clinically significant changes in the movement patterns of one or both joints.  This produces a complex mechanical condition leading to irritated joint surfaces, wearing down of joint surfaces and stretching / tearing of the supporting ligaments.

Someone with SI pain will typically experience a combination of low back pain, buttock or thigh pain, and discomfort while standing and sitting.   However, diagnosis of SI pain can be challenging given that conditions associated with the hip (piriformis syndrome) and lumbar spine (herniated disc) can mimic SI pain symptoms. This can lead to confusion in determining the most effective treatment option.

Treatment options vary, but proper diagnosis allows treatment selection to be targeted and effective in reducing this pain.  For SI pain, I utilize chiropractic manipulation which can be a comfortable means to a rapid recovery.  By addressing the mechanics of the region, I work to restore proper movement and stability of this complex joint.  Some patients may also require injections to relieve symptoms.  This two-fold approach allows a patient to benefit from pain reduction from the injection while addressing the core cause of the condition through chiropractic manipulation.

If you are suffering from continued low back pain I invite you to call our office. Let us help you to determine if the SI joint is causing your pain.

Dr. Scott Seidel on Text Neck

What is “text neck?”

This is a relatively new condition that I’ve seen in my office quite commonly over the past several years.  Usually people will come in with neck pain and stiffness from the back of the head to the middle of the shoulder blades.  This pain is experienced daily and does not seem to get better on its own.

In discussion with my patients, I usually find out that they are constantly on their cell phone/tablet and checking or sending texts.  Though it may seem innocuous, this can be a major contributor to neck pain. Think of it this way, if you are bending your neck and looking down at your device for long periods, you are putting stress and strain on the joints and muscles of your back of your neck.  Of course there will be pain!

This is not a natural position for the neck and can perpetuate poor posture.  Worse yet, this may increase your chances of having more neck pain and can contribute to chronic headaches.

As a chiropractor, it is my job to identify abnormal postures that can lead to this type of condition and resulting pain.  I focus on the reason for the condition and work with you to correct it.  If you are suffering from neck pain please call my office for an appointment.

Dr. Scott Seidel on Headache Treatment and Resolution

Posted on

So you have a pounding headache… Is it behind the eyes? Does it form a tight band around your head? Does it affect your daily enjoyment or productivity?

What will you do about it now?  What have you been doing so far?  Wouldn’t you agree it’s finally time to have this problem examined in order to figure out how to get rid of this menacing visitor for good? If so, there may be hope for you yet.

As far as headache treatments go, many people will try lying down, using ice and/or heat, applying muscle creams or popping various pills.  Additionally, some people try taking the day off work, sleeping in a dark room or restricting their normal daily activities.  These are a “band-aide” until the next headache surfaces -usually worsening in frequency, severity and duration as time progresses.

A better solution may be chiropractic care.  While there are many triggers for headaches (such as certain foods, lights or noise), most headaches actually result from excessive tension at the base of the skull or in the neck – except for the small percentage due to a disease process.  Our daily life leads to improper spinal posture – at the computer, driving, watching TV and using a smartphone/tablet.   When a headache hits, it is often a signal that the neck is in distress.  The tension that builds at the base of the neck creates pressure on the nervous system (nerves and spinal cord) leading to the headache.  For people who have this type of headache, chiropractic care can be quite effective in reducing / eliminating the headache and also preventing a return.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, spinal conditions that lead to these types of problems are my primary concern.  I will work with you to help determine the reason for your headache and the most effective way to quickly address, reduce and manage your condition – without the need for medication or other drastic measures.  I assure you, for most people it is completely possible to live life without headaches.

If you are suffering from headaches and the “solutions” you have tried up to this point are insufficient, please call our office for a complete consultation and examination to discuss your condition and treatment options.

Dr. Scott Seidel on Pregnancy-Related Back Pain

Posted on

Ask any expectant mother and they will tell you that with the many physical changes of pregnancy, back pain is one of the most difficult to adjust to.  There is good reason for this.  On average, most expectant mothers gain 25-35 lbs throughout their pregnancies.  As a result, tremendous stress may be placed on the regions of the low back – and also the growing baby.

Complicating the clinical picture further, as a woman’s center of gravity changes in late pregnancy, shifting the hips and pelvis out of normal alignment, the baby’s head may press down upon the woman’s back, legs, buttocks and sciatic nerve, leading to consistent leg pain along with back pain.

All of these changes, although significant, are natural and needed for regular development.  Given this fact, it is no surprise that a recent Swedish study revealed that 61% of pregnant women report back pain at some point in pregnancy.

Expectant mothers today are often keeping up a household and continuing to work full time.  Severe low back or leg pain can significantly hamper daily activity.  Additionally, this pain can surface when at rest often leading to “rough” nights of sleep or even restless leg syndrome.

The good news is that there is a safe and natural method of relief for these complaints.  As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I have experience working with pregnant patients to help restore balance to the bones of the pelvis and hips. This process helps to relieve pain and also prepare the body for the stress of delivery.  Care for the pregnant patient is very gentle and relief can be immediate if the pain is spinal in origin.  If you are experiencing pregnancy-related pain, I invite you to call our office. You do not need to suffer with this pain any longer.

Dr. Scott Seidel on Signs of a Herniated Disc

Posted on

Herniated discs are a common concern for people suffering from back pain.  While there are many possible causes of back pain, it is necessary to be certain if there is a herniated (or torn) disc leading to your discomfort.

Whether or not there has been a known injury, most patients with a disc herniation will typically feel back pain that extends into one of their legs that has developed over many days or even months.  A herniated disc is when the nucleus pulposus (the center of the disc) is contained within the anulus fibrosus (the outer layers of the disc).  The anulus fibrosus is very pain sensitive and a herniated disc could cause back pain and, if the herniated disc presses on a spinal nerve, may cause leg pain.  If the herniation is mild you may have pain into the gluteal region. If pain extends to the back of the thigh or knee, the herniation may be of moderate size.  For the severe herniation, the pain may go the ankle and foot.  The location of your leg pain could help to determine the actual nerve location in the back that is involved.

Along with pain in the legs, patients with disc herniations will describe increasing pain with bending, lifting and twisting type movement. The pain may be sharp, burning, pins/needles or numb. In an attempt to reduce the pain, most patients try to lean away from the pain, therefore walking or standing in positions that are not normal.
If you are diagnosed with a herniated disc, the good news is that treatment does not necessarily have to be surgical.  There are many options available as long as the pain has not gone on too long and chiropractic care is one of them.  As a chiropractor, I use treatment protocols specifically directed to the region leading to your pain to correct the problem.

Treatment for this condition is safe and comfortable, but patients should be aware that healing time for a torn/herniated disc could take 2-3 months before the disc is strong enough to withstand normal daily and/or heavy activity.  Your treatments may start out a little more intensive at first but will reduce as your condition improves (everybody is different). Because a herniated disc is considered a severe diagnosis, the treatment is usually more extensive than when dealing with other causes of low back pain. You may also require forms of care beyond chiropractic in order to alleviate pain and to build stronger core and back muscles to prevent the condition from returning.  Rest assured that all options are available to patients and will be selected based on each individual presentation.

If you feel that your back pain is getting worse or you notice leg pain, please call our office for an immediate evaluation to determine the best course of care for you.

Dr. Scott Seidel – Back Pain is NOT a Fact of Life

Posted on

It’s just back pain, right?

It’s a common refrain from many people suffering with back pain and not getting the care required, but there is another angle to understand.  As a chiropractor, my focus is on treating those with spinal conditions (or helping them find the right care).  It is my goal to help my patients realize the importance of spinal care because spinal conditions are not to be taken lightly.

The Global Burden of Disease Project 2010 – a massive collaboration between worldwide public health departments of major universities – has some conclusions about the health burden of low back and neck pain that may shock you.

Low back pain is the number one cause of disability worldwide. Neck pain is a close number four.  According the project, these conditions are leading to an increasingly larger footprint on the burden of human disease compared to 20-30 years ago.
In real numbers, the project estimates that more than 1.7 Billion people have neck or back pain.  That number means that back or neck pain have a greater impact on the health of the world than HIV/AIDS, tropical diseases, forces of war and nature and all neurological diseases – COMBINED!

Furthermore, low back pain accounts for over half of all musculoskeletal diseases and neck pain is one fifth.  The data collected in the Project suggests that painful spinal disorders are second only to ischemic heart disease (in terms of impact to global health).

So, while you may think living with back or neck pain is “normal” or “just a fact of life”, I would like to offer a different perspective and suggest that you do something about it. Please don’t think you have to live with the pain!

I offer safe, conservative, non-surgical care for spinal conditions as well as coordinated care options with other physician specialists as needed.  I invite you to call my office at The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group for an appointment to assess the cause of your pain and discuss your treatment options.

Dr. Scott Seidel on Chiropractic Care for Neck and Back Injuries

Posted on

If you have injured your neck or back, you may be unsure about when and how to pursue treatment.  Most people try to allow the injury to heal on its own using rest and medication.  However, if your symptoms do not improve within a few days or pain medication does not provide relief, your injury may be more serious and require medical attention.

Back/Neck injuries can involve any or all of the following:

  • Soft tissue injury – damage to muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc
  • Damage to spinal joints and spinal discs
  • Damage to nerve tissue and vascular structures

As a chiropractor, I seek to first determine the source of your neck or back pain, allowing for the proper care plan to be developed.  I then work to correct the problem by promoting healing as well as improving the movement and strength of your spine to prevent the problem from returning.

Chiropractic care is a safe, drug-free and nonsurgical treatment option for your neck or back injury.  If you have a neck or back injury and are wondering if chiropractic care might work for you, I encourage you to contact my office.
