Dr. Stephen Drukker on Chainsaw Safety

Posted on

In light of golfer Greg Norman’s chainsaw accident over the weekend, Dr. Stephen Drukker, hand and wrist specialist with The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group, was interviewed by WOAI Radio regarding power tool safety this morning.

Norman was using a chainsaw to trim tree branches when the weight of a branch pulled his hand toward the blade. According to Dr. Drukker, homeowners have a tendency to get so familiar with common power tools like chainsaws and lawnmowers that they forget the power these items have. “I think we get comfortable with the chain saw, we work over our head, we lean off the ladder when we use the chain saw.” About 400,000 people make visits to the ER every year with injuries related to househole power tools.

Safety tips for chainsaw use include:

  • Maintain secure footing.
  • Wear protective gloves and eyewear.
  • Never disable an automatic shut off switch.
  • Avoid using the chainsaw above your head if possible. If you must use it above your head, try to cut to the side of your body instead of directly above.
  • Keep the chainsaw blade cleaned and sharpened to reduce the amount of energy you have to use to get the tool to work.

Dr. Philip Jacobs on Trampoline Park Safety

Posted on

With few exceptions, kids love trampolines. Bouncing is fun and great exercise. However, with the increasing popularity of indoor trampoline parks, there are a few safety concerns of which parents should be aware.

TSAOG sports medicine specialist Dr. Philip M. Jacobs was recently interviewed on the subject for a feature in the San Antonio Express-News. If you missed it, check out the full article here.

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report advising against recreational trampoline use due to the risk of injury. The report warned that parents can feel a false sense of security at home if they are using safety measures like nets and padding, while studies suggest that these measures do not significantly reduce the risk of injury and many injuries occur on the trampoline surface itself. The report also warned that:

  • Approximately 75% of trampoline-related injuries occurred when more than one person was jumping at the same time.
  • The youngest and smallest jumpers (usually those 5 years of age and under) are at higher risk for significant injuries, including fractures and dislocations.
  • Attempting stunts, like somersaulting and flipping, increases a child’s risk for head and neck injuries, which can have permanent consequences.

Trampoline-related injuries include:

  • Broken bones
  • Dislocations
  • Concussions and other head/neck injuries
  • Sprains/strains
  • Bruises, scrapes, and cuts

Injuries happen most commonly when children:

  • Land wrong
  • Try stunts
  • Collide with another person
  • Jump or fall off of the trampoline
  • Land on the frame or springs of the trampoline

Trampoline injury statistics can be scary. A new study released in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics looked at trampoline-related injuries resulting in ER visits between 2002 and 2011. It found that over 1 million people visited emergency rooms due to trampoline-related injuries during that time and almost 300,000 of those cases involved fractures. The vast majority of these injuries happened to children 16 years of age and under, with an average age of injury of 9 years old.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has released the following trampoline safety guidelines:

  • Never allow children to use trampolines without proper safety measures and adult supervision and instruction.
  • Only one jumper should be allowed to use the trampoline at any given time. This helps prevent injuries from collisions and prevents smaller jumpers from being propelled higher than they should go by larger jumpers.
  • Avoid somersaults and flips without proper supervision and safety equipment, which could include a harness. This helps to prevent injuries to the head and neck.
  • Place the trampoline jumping surface at ground level, which helps prevent injuries from falling or jumping off the trampoline.
  • Check safety equipment (such as nets and padding) regularly and repair/replace as necessary.
  • Trampoline use is not recommended for children under the age of 6.

According to Dr. Jacobs, “As a parent, you want to keep your kids safe, but there are risks with most activities that kids like to do. I take my son to the skate park with his pads and helmet on, but there is still a risk for injury. The most important thing is to be aware of the risks and the safety guidelines to minimize your child’s risk for injuries.

Dr. Philip M. Jacobs is no longer a member of The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group, effective 9/30/2016. To schedule an appointment with a different sports medicine specialist, please call 210.281.9595.

Dr. Ronald Connor on Lawn Mower Safety

Posted on

TSAOG orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ronald W. Connor was recently interviewed by WOAI’s Jim Forsyth regarding lawn mower safety. Tune in to WOAI Radio all day today to catch the full interview.

In 2013, over 300,000 people were treated for lawn mower-related injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Of those injuries, about 1/3 were severe enough to be treated at the ER.

Mowing the lawn is such a routine activity that people have a tendency to overlook some of the serious safety hazards involved, but you can avoid injuries by taking some simple safety precautions, including:

  • Wear shoes with good traction to avoid slipping.
  • Use a mower that stops automatically when you let go of the handle.
  • Before you mow, look for and remove rocks and other objects that could become dangerous projectiles.
  • Wear protective eye wear.
  • Never use your hands or feet to remove debris from a lawn mower, even if the motor is turned off. Use a stick or broom handle instead.
  • Keep small children off the lawn while you are mowing.

Also, according to Dr. Connor, you should “never put a child on a riding lawn mower with an adult because if they fall off that can be a catastrophic injury.

For more lawn mower safety tips, please visit the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Stephen Drukker on What to Do About Animal Bites

Posted on

So you’ve been bitten by an animal? It can happen in an instant. You’re playing tug of war with your dog and get nipped. Your cat gets scared at the vet and bites to get away. Maybe it’s true aggression. Sometimes it’s your pet, sometimes it’s someone else’s, and sometimes it’s a wild animal.

In any case, you need to know what to do to avoid some serious consequences. I sat down with TSAOG hand and wrist specialist Dr. Stephen C. Drukker to find out what to do when you’ve been bitten by an animal.

What is my first step if I have been bitten by an animal?

First thing’s first. Any time you are bitten by a mammal (cat, dog, bat, etc), rabies is a concern. All animal bites should be reported to animal control as they will want to quarantine the animal for 10 days to watch for signs of rabies.

If the animal is not contained (if it is wild or a domestic animal that bit and ran away) and cannot be observed, you should seek medical attention immediately to have the wound cleaned and dressed and to begin receiving rabies vaccinations. The CDC recommends that people who have been exposed receive a series of 4 rabies vaccine shots over 2 weeks following the bite, exactly what happened to Manu Ginobili following the “bat incident” a few years ago.

Remember, rabies is 99%+ treatable with a vaccine, but 99%+ fatal if you wait for symptoms to appear.

What can I do at home for an animal bite?

At home, you want to perform basic first aid. Wash the wound with warm, soapy water, apply antibiotic ointment, and dress the wound. Then, watch carefully for signs of infection.

How do I know if I need to see a doctor for an animal bite?

Again, if the animal is not contained and rabies is a concern, you should seek medical attention immediately. If rabies is not a concern, other signs that you should seek medical attention immediately include:

  • If you suffer from diabetes or any kind of immune deficiency
  • If you have a deep puncture wound
  • If you have multiple puncture wounds

If these do not apply, you can observe the wound at home and watch for signs of infection.

What are the signs of infection?

If you notice increasing pain, redness, or swelling, these are signs of infection and you should see a doctor.

What will the doctor do for my bite wound?

Generally, a physician will open, clean, and dress the wound and prescribe antibiotics. If you do not see improvement within 12-24 hours after starting antibiotics, you should contact your physician for a recheck.

If rabies is not a possibility, how bad could an animal bite be?

Bad. If not treated quickly, severe infections are common in cases of animal bites, whether they are wild animals or beloved pets. Severe infections can lead to lose of tissue (necrosis) as well as loss of function. In these cases, surgical drainage and treatment can be required.

Infection can set in and become severe very quickly following an animal bite. The best advice I can give is that if you see any sign of infection following an animal bite, don’t wait to seek medical attention and you may avoid some serious and lasting consequences.

  • Dr. Seidel very quickly diagnosed my issue. I have had many other Drs check on my back pain mainly the VA and they always thought it was an old issue. I was so happy to find that there was a real reason for the pain in the new area. Dr. Seidel quickly saw the issue and offered a solution. I appreciated that medication was not thrown at me to mask the symptoms. He wanted to handle the issue with a non medication treatment plan and that is ok with me. I am tired of pain meds. Way to go!! Dr. Seidel!!!!! You have a fan in me and a long time client. I am sure with my back issues I will be around for some time!!”

Dr Rahal was the one who did the procedure and he was also excellent, great bedside manner, and informed me every step of the way what he was doing, very genuine and knowledgeable.
