Dr. Christian Balldin on RG3’s Ankle Dislocation Injury

Robert Griffin, III (aka RG3) injured his left ankle in the Washington Redskins win over Jacksonville on Sunday.  What does this mean for RG3 and Washington?  Per multiple media outlets, the dislocated ankle revealed no fractures in the ankle but he certainly has ligamentous injuries.  Depending on the severity of injury to the multiple ligaments around the ankle, he may have a chance to return to playing this season.  It will depend on the actual area of the ankle that is injured and the severity of the torn ligaments.

Recurrent ankle instability may occur after an injury such as this and that would lead to needing surgery if the ankle continues to feel unstable when he tries to change direction and/or gives out.  As we find out more information regarding the severity of his injury and specifics of the actual area of ankle hurt, we will be able to have a more appropriate timetable for his return.

RG3 has had an injury-prone early career in the NFL thus far. He struggled last year to return from a significant right knee revision ACL reconstruction and LCL (aka FCL) reconstruction. We wish him the best of luck in his recovery and eventual return to play.
