How Did Tyquan Thornton Get Hurt?
On October 4th, 2026, with about three and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, threw a 55-yard pass to Tyquan Thornton. After being contacted by a Las Vegas Raiders defender Thornton’s ankle was forced into extreme external rotation. This led to a dislocation fracture of his left ankle, likely with associated ligament damage.
What Happens Next?
The first step on the road to recovery after an injury like this will be imaging such as X-rays and MRIs, to determine the full severity of the injury. The ankle mortise is a complex structure with many bones and ligaments working together to provide flexibility and stability to the lower leg. His team of orthopedic surgeons will need as much information as they can get before they determine what the best course of action will be.
Will Thornton Need Surgery?
Surgery is usually required to correct a dislocation fracture. Once his doctors determine which structures in his lower extremity are injured, they will create a plan to surgically repair the damaged bone and soft tissue. Surgery, however, is not the end of the Tyquan’s road to recovery. Once the ankle has been repaired, he will need to undergo extensive physical rehabilitation under the care of his expert training team to get back to being competition ready.
