Eizembern leading to pain, numbness, or difficulty with movement. At TSAOG, our orthopaedic back and neck surgery specialists are committed to helping patients understand their symptoms and explore the most effective treatment options. In this guide, we’ll walk through the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and when to seek care for spinal stenosis.

Spinal stenosis most commonly affects the lower back and neck, though symptoms can vary depending on the site of narrowing. In some cases, symptoms develop gradually and worsen over time, making it difficult to recognize when to seek care. Understanding how spinal stenosis develops and what it feels like can help patients take the right next steps.

What Is Spinal Stenosis And How Does It Affect Your Spine?

Spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal or the spaces where nerves exit the spine. This narrowing reduces the room available for the spinal cord and nerve roots, which can lead to irritation or compression.

As pressure builds, nerves may not function properly, resulting in symptoms that extend beyond the spine itself. In the lower back, this often affects the legs and walking ability. In the neck, symptoms may involve the shoulders, arms, or hands. The location of the narrowing plays a key role in how symptoms appear and progress.

What Causes Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is most often related to age-related changes in the spine. Over time, discs can lose height, joints can become arthritic, and ligaments may thicken, all of which can reduce the space within the spinal canal.

Degenerative conditions are the most common cause, but other factors can also contribute. Herniated discs, bone spurs, and thickened ligaments can all contribute to narrowing. In some cases, spinal alignment issues or prior injuries may accelerate these changes.

As outlined by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, these structural changes can gradually reduce the space around the spinal cord and nerves, leading to the symptoms of spinal stenosis.

What Are The Symptoms Of Spinal Stenosis?

Symptoms of spinal stenosis often develop gradually and may worsen over time. Because nerves are involved, symptoms can extend beyond the spine and affect other areas of the body.

Pain is one of the most common symptoms and may be felt in the lower back or neck. In many cases, it is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation that travels into the arms or legs.

Some patients experience weakness or difficulty with coordination, particularly when standing or walking for extended periods. In lumbar spinal stenosis, symptoms may improve when sitting or leaning forward, which temporarily relieves pressure on the nerves.

In more advanced cases, walking distances may become limited by leg discomfort or fatigue. These changes can affect daily activities and overall mobility.

How Is Spinal Stenosis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a thorough evaluation of symptoms, medical history, and physical movement. Physicians assess strength, sensation, and reflexes to determine whether nerve involvement is present.

Imaging studies are often used to confirm the diagnosis and identify the exact location of narrowing. MRI scans are commonly used because they provide detailed views of soft tissues, including discs and nerves. X-rays or CT scans may also be used to evaluate bone structures and alignment.

Accurate diagnosis helps distinguish spinal stenosis from other conditions that may cause similar symptoms, ensuring that treatment is directed at the true source of the problem.

How To Treat Spinal Stenosis: Nonsurgical Care, Injections, And Surgery Options

Treatment for spinal stenosis depends on the severity of symptoms and how much they affect daily life. In many cases, care begins with conservative approaches to reduce pain and improve function.

Nonsurgical treatment may include activity modification, guided exercise, and care from specialists who focus on improving mobility and reducing strain on the spine. Some patients also benefit from working with providers who specialize in pain management, particularly when symptoms involve nerve irritation or inflammation.

When conservative care is insufficient, targeted injections may be used to reduce inflammation on affected nerves. These procedures are designed to provide relief while avoiding more invasive interventions.

If symptoms continue to progress or significantly limit quality of life, surgical treatment may be considered. Procedures focus on relieving pressure on the nerves by creating more space within the spinal canal. For some patients, this approach can provide lasting relief when other treatments have not been effective.

TSAOG Orthopaedics & Spine Receives HCCT Innovation Award for Contact Center Transformation

Recognition highlights advancements in patient access through intelligent scheduling and Voice AI technology

San Antonio, TX – TSAOG Orthopaedics & Spine has been named the recipient of the Innovation Award (Less Than 50 Agents) by Healthcare Contact Center Times (HCCT), recognizing its efforts to improve patient access and operational efficiency through technology. The award is part of the inaugural HCCT Awards, which honor healthcare organizations demonstrating excellence, culture, and innovation in contact center operations.

Orthopedic contact centers continue to face rising demand driven by an aging population and increased need for specialized care. These pressures often result in longer wait times and strained administrative resources. TSAOG addressed these challenges by implementing an intelligent scheduling system integrated with Voice AI, restructuring how patient inquiries and appointment requests are managed.

The approach focused on optimizing staff time by automating routine interactions while maintaining access to personalized support when needed. Voice AI now manages 75 percent of cancellation requests without staff intervention. In addition, self-scheduled appointments increased by 20 percent year over year, and average call-handling time decreased from 7 minutes to 3.5 minutes.

The changes have also impacted patient access. Among patients who used self-scheduling, 63.8 percent secured appointments within seven days, and 68 percent of those appointments were for new patients. These outcomes reflect a measurable shift in how quickly patients can connect with orthopedic care.

“TSAOG demonstrated that intelligent automation, implemented thoughtfully, doesn’t diminish the patient experience,” says Derek Lok, publisher of Healthcare Contact Center Times. “TSAOG shows other contact centers how to reach patients faster, while giving the care team room to do their best work.”

Award recipients will be recognized at the HCCT annual conference in Atlanta, scheduled for June 3-5.

When To Go The Orthopedic Doctor vs. Emergency Room

The right place to go for an orthopedic injury depends on how serious the injury is and how quickly care is needed. At TSAOG, patients have access to both an Urgent Injury Orthopedic Clinic and a full range of orthopedic services, making it easier to get the right care without unnecessary delays.

Injuries can happen at any time, and deciding where to go in the moment is not always clear. Some situations require immediate emergency care, while others can be treated more efficiently by an orthopedic specialist. Understanding the difference can help you avoid long wait times, reduce costs, and get more targeted treatment.

When Should I Go to the Emergency Room for an Orthopedic Injury?

The emergency room is best suited for serious or potentially life-threatening injuries. This includes situations where there is significant trauma, visible deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of sensation. Injuries that involve head trauma or possible internal damage should also be evaluated in an ER setting.
Emergency departments are equipped to stabilize patients and handle a wide range of urgent medical conditions. Millions of people visit emergency departments each year, many for injuries that require immediate attention. In these cases, rapid access to imaging, trauma care, and emergency intervention is critical.

If an injury involves severe pain, inability to move a limb, or signs of nerve damage, the ER is the safest choice. These symptoms may indicate a more serious condition that requires immediate evaluation.

When Should I Seek an Orthopedic Doctor for an Orthopedic Injury?

Not all injuries require emergency care. Many orthopedic issues can be evaluated and treated by a specialist, especially when symptoms are stable and not worsening rapidly. Orthopedic doctors specialize on bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles. These specialists are trained to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions using both surgical and non-surgical approaches.

Patients often benefit from seeing an orthopedic doctor for ongoing joint pain, mild fractures, sports injuries, or conditions that have not improved with rest. This approach allows for more targeted care and follow-up, which is important for proper healing and recovery.

Seeking care through an orthopedic provider can also help patients avoid unnecessary emergency visits. A significant portion of emergency department visits are for non-urgent conditions that could be treated in more appropriate settings. For orthopedic injuries such as sprains, minor fractures, or joint pain, specialized care often provides faster, more focused treatment without the delays of the ER.

What is an Orthopedic Urgent Care and When Should I Go?

Orthopedic urgent care clinics are designed to bridge the gap between the emergency room and a scheduled doctor visit. They provide same-day care for injuries that need prompt attention but are not life-threatening.

At TSAOG’s Urgent Injury Orthopedic Clinic, patients can be evaluated quickly by providers who specialize in musculoskeletal conditions. We treat injuries such as sprains, minor fractures, joint pain, and sports-related issues.

The urgent care setting is often the most efficient option for patients who need care the same day but do not require emergency intervention. Instead of waiting in a crowded ER, patients receive focused orthopedic care in a setting designed specifically for these types of injuries.

Orthopedic urgent care can also provide imaging, bracing, and treatment recommendations during the same visit, helping patients move forward with care more quickly.

ER vs Orthopedic Urgent Care vs Orthopedic Doctor: Cost and Wait Times

Where you go for care can significantly affect both cost and wait time. Emergency rooms are typically the most expensive option and often involve longer wait times, especially when treating non-life-threatening conditions.

Orthopedic urgent care visits are generally more affordable and faster, since they focus specifically on musculoskeletal issues. Patients are often seen sooner and can begin treatment without the delays commonly experienced in emergency settings.

Seeing an orthopedic doctor through a scheduled visit may offer the most continuity of care, but it may not always be the fastest option when an injury occurs suddenly. Each setting plays a role, but choosing the right one can make a noticeable difference in both experience and outcome.

What Happens After Your Visit?

After an initial evaluation, the next steps depend on the type and severity of the injury. Some patients may only need rest, bracing, or guided activity changes. Others may require imaging, physical therapy, or follow-up visits to monitor healing.

Orthopedic care often involves a step-by-step approach. Initial treatment focuses on reducing pain and stabilizing the injury, followed by rehabilitation to restore strength and mobility. In some cases, additional procedures may be recommended if symptoms do not improve.

Having access to a full range of services, including TSAOG’s surgery centers, allows care to progress smoothly if more advanced treatment is needed. Patients can also review pricing transparency information to better understand costs and plan for care.

Need Care After Hours? Visit Orthopedic Urgent Care

If an injury occurs outside regular office hours or requires prompt attention, TSAOG’s Urgent Injury Ortho Clinic offers a convenient option for same-day care. This allows patients to receive specialized treatment without the delays and expense of an emergency room visit.

Choosing the right place for care can make recovery more efficient and less stressful. When symptoms are not life-threatening but still need immediate attention, orthopedic urgent care offers a practical and effective solution.

If you need care now, walk-ins are welcome, or you can book an appointment to be evaluated by TSAOG’s orthopedic specialists and get the treatment you need without unnecessary delays.
